Dr. Royce Hutson has been conducting research on human rights violations in Lebanon. This research involves examining the impact that conflict and social exclusion have had on three separate population groups in Lebanon. Using advanced survey methodologies designed to specifically generate random samples in disorganized areas, Dr. Hutson and his team looked at how conflict relates to the everyday lives as experienced by noncombatants. The first survey examined the extent of the physical and property damage in South Lebanon as well as the psychosocial impacts of that war and also examined the extent to which the experience of that war was related to attitudes regarding Hizbollah, Israel, the Lebanese government, the UN, and small arms regulation. The second survey, conducted in the poverty stricken area of Northeast Lebanon examined how poverty, experiences of conflict and crime, and social exclusion impact residents attitudes regarding smuggling, smuggling interdiction, and both the international and Lebanese security institutions operating in the region. Lastly, in 2009, Dr. Hutson and his team conducted surveys in three Palestinian Refugee camps in Lebanon examining how experiences of social exclusion, human rights violations, and other poor social outcomes relate to attitudes and opinions surrounding global jihadism. This examination attempts to understand how social injustice may be the primary driver of jihadism in the refugee camps.
